parrotYes it’s true, Jan and I are the keepers of a lovebird named “Bird”. Jan’s friend Micah moved to NYC and needed a new owner for bird (at least that’s his story). In steps Jan — voila! When I arrived home, I thought we were temporarily pet-sitting. Surprise! So now the cat Romeo has a friend to stalk and harass, which he loves to do.

Bird the LovebirdBird is a cranky bird sometimes and likes to try to nip fingers. But she can be sweet too (well, sweet for her!) and did I mention loud? She likes to chirp, especially when she hears other birds. When the cat’s outside, I let her out of the cage and she usually flies over and sits on the top of my head, then hops on my keyboard and gives my fingers the evil eye for a little while. She loves to explore with her beak, which sometimes means bites and nips. We’re trying to re-train her but it’s very slooooow going.

romey stalkingAfter a bit of research, I found out she is a junk-food junkie! I’m working on changing her diet from all seeds (not healthy) to include some bird chow (healthy). She’s not very happy about it. And I’m having fun torturing her with vegetables and fruits! No luck yet — she won’t even try them. Though I did find she likes flax seeds, which are healthy.

I’ve started sprouting sunflower seeds for her. Unsprouted, they are high in fat and not very healthy. Sprouted, they are nutritious and delicious! Well, I’m still trying to convince her they’re delicious, but she does eat them when she gets hungry enough.
