OK, admit it…there’s a playful monster in you that likes to come out at times. Perhaps last night during the full moon? Well now you can see what you look like as monster!
Simply post a comment and we’ll assemble you a unique monster based on your name. This is my favorite bling-bling on this blog…yes, even better than the virtual plants!
Generating an artistic monster can be processor-intensive and may take a bit of time, but only the first time you comment. Please be patient and reload the page if it doesn’t finish loading — it should be faster for your future comments. Let me know if the monsters or anything on this site doesn’t finish loading or could be improved. I welcome any and all suggestions and feedback.
The monsters are generated by a wordpress plugin called MonsterID by ScottS-M. Not bad for Scott’s first plugin!!
The original monsters are cool enough, but I really love the “artistic” monsters you see here which were hand-drawn by Lemm. Scott also made a similar plugin called Identicon with unique geometric shapes.
I encourage you explore this site and leave lots of relevant comments and spread your monster around. Let your inner monster out — let the comments commence! ![]()

I’ll post again in a few and see if that is any faster.
Love ya
yup, much faster the second time.
Hey Man, there’s a monster in my pants.
took about 30 seconds
Hmm. 30 and 15 seconds aren’t too great. I really need to figure out a way to optimize that. Let me check how long mine will take.
I finally got around to making an update to the MonsterID plugin. Artistic monsters should be slightly faster but not as much as I had hoped. Also I added to the control panel to allow adding custom css for the widget and normal monsterids. If you update don’t forget to grab the css from your edits to the plugin (you should be able to avoid any more php editing and plug that CSS in in the Widget control panel in the MonsterID Recent Comment widget controls).
I messed around for quite a while trying to get vertical centering for the recent comment text and monsterid but I didn’t have any luck. I think I could do it if I regenerated a smaller size monsterid and used it as background on the <li> but I’m guessing it’s not worth the extra processing and harddrive space. I ended up going with default CSS pretty much like you have here (minus spacing and margins and such). Also adding
overflow:auto;toul#monsterid_recentcommentsseems to fix some crazy spacing problems I was having on other layouts (I think it fixes the bottom spacing on yours [although your manual fix works just fine too]).Thanks for all the testing.
